Rodents

What kinds of rodents are bothersome in Ohio?

In Ohio, several types of rodents are commonly found in and around properties. Some of the most prevalent rodents in the region include:

House mice are small rodents with gray or brown fur, often found in homes, barns, and other structures. They are skilled at squeezing through small openings and are notorious for their ability to breed rapidly.

Norway rats, also known as brown rats or sewer rats, are larger rodents with brown fur and blunt noses. They typically inhabit urban areas, sewers, and garbage dumps, where they can cause damage and spread diseases.

Roof rats, also called black rats, are agile climbers with black or dark brown fur. They are often found in attics, ceilings, and elevated areas of buildings, where they can access food sources and shelter.

Voles, also known as meadow mice or field mice, are small rodents that burrow in lawns, gardens, and agricultural fields. They feed on plant roots and can cause damage to vegetation.

Are rodents dangerous?

While not inherently harmful, rodents can present health, safety, and property risks that require effective management and control measures to mitigate. Rodents can carry and transmit diseases to humans through their droppings, urine, saliva, and parasites they harbor. Diseases transmitted by rodents include Hantavirus, Salmonellosis, Leptospirosis, and Rat-Bite Fever, among others.

Additionally, rodents can cause significant property damage by gnawing on electrical wiring, insulation, wood, and other building materials, which can lead to structural issues and fire hazards. Rodents may also contaminate food and food preparation surfaces, posing a risk of foodborne illness. Moreover, rodents such as rats and mice may display aggressive behavior if cornered or threatened, potentially resulting in bites or scratches.
