Silverfish

What are silverfish?

Silverfish are small, wingless insects that are named for their silvery, metallic appearance and their fish-like movement. These pests are typically about half an inch to one inch in length and have tapered bodies with three long bristles at the rear. Silverfish are nocturnal and primarily feed on carbohydrates, sugars, starches, and proteins, making them attracted to items such as paper, glue, fabric, and food crumbs. They are often found in damp, dark environments such as basements, bathrooms, kitchens, and attics, where they can thrive in humid conditions.

Are silverfish dangerous?

While silverfish are not known to transmit diseases to humans, they can cause damage to books, paper goods, clothing, and other household items. Additionally, their presence may indicate moisture problems in a structure, which can lead to mold growth and structural damage over time.
