Stinkbugs
What are stinkbugs?
Stinkbugs are named for the foul odor they emit when threatened or disturbed. They have glands in their thorax that produce a pungent chemical compound as a defensive mechanism against predators. When threatened, stinkbugs release this odor as a deterrent, which can be quite strong and unpleasant.
These insects are typically shield-shaped with a wide body and six legs. They come in various colors, including brown, gray, and green, and may have distinctive markings or patterns. These insects are herbivores and feed on plant juices by piercing the plant tissue with their needle-like mouthparts.
Stinkbugs can become household pests when they seek shelter indoors during the fall and winter months. They may enter homes and buildings through cracks, gaps, and openings in search of warmth and shelter. While stinkbugs do not bite or pose a direct threat to humans or pets, their presence indoors can be a nuisance due to the foul odor they emit when disturbed.
Can stinkbugs be harmful?
Stinkbugs are generally not considered dangerous to humans or pets in the same way that venomous spiders or stinging insects might be. They do not bite, sting, or transmit diseases, and their presence indoors is typically more of a nuisance than a health threat.
However, stinkbugs tend to invade homes in large numbers. They can emit a foul odor as a defense mechanism when they feel threatened or are disturbed. While the smell is not harmful, it can be quite strong and unpleasant, leading to discomfort for some individuals.
Please contact Dean’s Pest Control and ask about our Home Shield Program or our Property Shield Program, designed for commercial properties to ensure that stinkbug activity is controlled.
